The Bronxchester Challenger League is an autism dedicated baseball program based in the Bronx, NY. The league was founded by resident Lizette Hernandez in 2014 and saw 65 children sign up for the first season. A group of parents raised the money for equipment and uniforms through a series of local events.
In their second season over 120 children applied, filling the program to capacity. Fundraising has ramped up, together with innovative ideas such as equipment exchanges, trade ups and re-use.
Following our successful fundraising campaign in the New York City half marathon, Dylan’s Wings of Change was able to make a grant to support Bronxchester's growth and to work with Lizette to document her framework to share with other parents looking to follow her footsteps.
The real power of the league is the close involvement of the parents in their children’s experience. Dads and Moms lead the coaching and get to see their girls and boys enjoying a game that many typically developing children take for granted. Siblings can take part when a team is short on players, providing a whole family experience that is hard to find anywhere else.
Lizette is a true autism warrior, deeply involved connecting parents in her community, and is already looking to the future. As well as ideas for off-season training to maintain the children’s skills and interest, she has plans to begin a basketball program in the fall. Dylan’s Wings of Change looks forward to continuing our support for Lizette and the inspirational children and parents in her community.
