Wingman: Going above and beyond for others

November 14, 2015

Twelve students from New Fairfield Middle School were recognized today for selfless acts they have performed this semester. Nominated by their peers and teachers, they were treated to a celebration lunch at a local restaurant.

As part of New Fairfield's inaugural Wingman program, the students from grade six through eight and one invited guest came together at Biscotti's restaurant to receive their awards. Representatives from the school's PACK leadership team, who oversee all aspects of Wingman at the school, introduced each student and the acts of leadership, courage and compassion that had earned their nomination. Some recipients were learning for the first time what they had done to receive this recognition, which is a testament to the positive attitude they display at all times.

The awards are part of a year long program of activities that New Fairfield Middle School is developing with Dylan's Wings of Change. All 600 students at the school are stepping up to a series of "challenges" issued by the PACK team, designed to build a stronger, more meaningful community. A school "take-over" day was staged in October, where the entire schedule of lessons was replaced with team exercises, discussion groups and explorations of the traits that make a Wingman. Two more take-over days are planned later in the school calendar. At the end of the school year the whole school will come together to reflect and celebrate their journey.

As part of their communications plan, the students created this great video encouraging everyone to share what it means when #iamawingman.
