Now entering its 23rd year, Unified Sports in Connecticut’s schools continues to grow, demonstrating the strength of its programming and the commitment of all the students, teachers and staff that spearhead this model of inclusive sports.
Dylan’s Wings of Change is excited to continue our support of Unified Sports with a second year grant. We have visited events around the state; watched high school soccer teams come together in Newtown in the newly emerging locally arranged tournaments. We have seen the new program in Portland, a special collaboration between the school and the town Parks & Rec team experience phenomenal growth and town wide celebrations of what’s possible when positive attitudes meet the kindness of the community.
Part of the grant from Dylan’s Wings of Change was dedicated to expanding Unified Sports into new locations; schools that had not participated before. In 2015 this included Norwalk High School in the west of the state, Middletown and Portland in central CT and Mystic in the east. This dedicated fund continues into 2016 and will help enlist more middle and elementary schools to Unified Sports.
Unified Sports is a program of the Special Olympics, and in partnership with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletics Conference (CIAC) brings the program to over 220 schools of all grade levels across the state.
