A huge thank you to everyone who braved the conditions to compete in and cheer on the 2nd Annual Newtown Wingathlon, held at the Fairfield Hills campus this past weekend, Saturday May 7th.
45 individuals and teams entered the duathlon, won in an impressive 1hr 21min by Derek Tietjen of Little Silver, NJ closely followed by Cameron O'Bar of Middlebury. The 5K race was won by Nick Jacobs, aged 14 of Newtown in 18:39 leading in a field of 112 runners and walkers. The races drew competitors from 42 different towns across 5 states, showing the wide ranging appeal and popularity of this event.
Everyone enjoyed free chicken wings from Cover 2 sports bar in Sandy Hook and the amazing bagels from Eunice at Bagel Delight in Newtown. We are grateful to Powerstation Events and DJ Hersh for the music that lifted everyone’s spirits as the rain moved in through the morning.
The duathlon winners took home Garmin Fitbits and gift vouchers donated by Ridgefield Bicycle Company. Great raffle items were donated by G-Form, Timberland and Bauer. All the entrants took home swag from Skullcandy and Cannondale.
A huge thank you to all our race marshals and volunteers for making the event run so smoothly and race directors Bob Burbank and Tony Barbagallo for once again masterminding this unique event.
