Camp Wings of Friendship is a program we developed in partnership with The Friendship Journey, a nonprofit based in Broward County, FL. After first connecting in January 2020 and being thrust into the COVID-19 pandemic, our two organizations immediately collaborated to bring the best of our own programming together in this new virtual world. Inspired by the acclaimed documentary Crip Camp, Camp Wings of Friendship has grown into a community connected by shared values and the desire to create a better world for all.
In our first year we provided over 200 hours of programming for people with disabilities. In 2021 we expanded our reach with campers attending from across the United States and Canada, with counselors volunteering from as far away as Seattle, WA. In 2022 we are set to grow Camp even further with new partnerships across the US.
By far the best way to learn about Camp is to watch the Showcase produced by the class of 2020. In this 40 minute movie you will learn about the origins of our partnership, hear the experiences of campers and counselors, see performance from Broadway stars and hear from some of the many special guests that visited us over the summer. The Showcase finished with a rousing finale as the campers 'sing' along to "Look for the Good" by Jason Mraz using American Sign Language.
